Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian (5,199 meters (17,057 ft)), Nelion (5,188 metres (17,021 ft)) and Point Lenana (4,985 meters (16,355 ft)).

Mount Kenya is located in central Kenya, just south of the equator, around 150 kilometers north-northeast of the capital Nairobi. Mt. Kenya is the origin of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The Batian and Nelion peaks are separated by the “Gate of the Mists” a deep notch which is very difficult to cross.

It is a long climb and considered more serious and difficult. Point Batian and Nelion are only for very experienced rock climbers. Batian Climb takes 8 Days and is a very demanding route! Lenana Peak is very scenic and offers one a perfect challenge to accomplish. Its highest point has excellent views of the striking Mountain!

Fun Facts About Mount Kenya
At Mount Kenya, the sun sets and rises at the same time every day.
At 17,057ft, it is the highest mountain in Kenya and 2nd highest in Africa.
The park attracts over 16,000 visitors each year.
Mount Kenya is much more difficult to climb than Kilimanjaro.
The first recorded ascent of Mount Kenya was in 1899.

Safari Itinerary

Day One

Nairobi – Sirimon Gate – Old Moses Camp

We will meet at 6:45 AM at the Hilton Hotel (Bata). We Leave Nairobi at 7:00 am by a Share Taxi and will be accompanied by our experienced mountain guides as we arrive in Nanyuki town at 10:30 am. From Nanyuki, we will drive to Sirimon Gate (1 hr) 2,600 M.

From the gate, we will follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest which becomes heathland. We will walk for 4 hours from the gate using the established track to Old Moses Camp at 3,300 M. Dinner and overnight at the Camp.

Day Two

Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp

Soon after breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses Ontulili River.

Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North and continue uphill to Mackinder’s Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp which is 4,200 M.

Day Three

Shipton’s – Point Lenana – Old Moses

The next day we will wake up early in the morning at 2:30 am ready for point Lenana at 4,985 M. At 3:00 am we commence our trek; we walk up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving point Lenana at 6:30 am, taking about 3 hrs. After the sunrise, we will descend down to Shipton’s Hut for main breakfast. We proceed further down to Old Moses Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day Four

Old Moses – Nairobi

After breakfast, we will walk to the Sirimon Gate. Here we take a shared taxi to Nairobi where the tour ends. Mount Kenya is beautiful and has quite panoramic views for you to appreciate the elegance of nature. In addition to this; our mountain guides are skilled and you will come back with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
