Safari Itinerary: Rwanda Highlights Safari – 9 days

Day One: Arrival and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Our company driver will meet you on arrival at Kanombe airport. Drive to Nyungwe forest national park arriving late in the afternoon. On arrival report to Gisakura guest house / Nyungwe forest lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day Two: Primates walk in Nyungwe

After breakfast report to the Nyungwe Park headquarters where you will be led by a ranger guide into the forest to track chimpanzees and other primates. Nyungwe is Rwanda’s most important area of biodiversity and has been rated the highest priority for forest conservation in Africa.

The park boasts of 75 mammal species, 13 primate species, 275 bird species, 120 butterfly species and 1000 plant species including the rare endemic Orchids. Possible sightings in the forest may include: the Angolan colobus, L’hoests monkey, the Silver Monkey, Owl faced monkey and the Grey-cheeked Mangabey to mention but a few. Retire for dinner and overnight in Gisakura Guest House / Nyungwe forest lodge.

Day Three: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Leave Nyungwe after breakfast and drive to Park National des Volcans in Ruhengeri. The drive from Nyungwe will take around 4 and half hours. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Nest Lodge / La Palme hotel/Hotel Muhabura.

Day Four: Gorilla Trekking

After breakfast report to the Ruhengeri park headquarters as early as 7:00 am. After a short drill as regards your expected gorilla tracking conduct is concerned, you will enter the rainforest in search of the mountain gorillas.

It is advisable to carry along with you a packed lunch, energy bite, mineral water on this expedition because sometimes tracking can last very long from 1-6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. On locating the gorillas, the experience is so exhilarating and will be well worth the trouble.

Spend a maximum of one hour with the gorillas then return to your lodge. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Nest Lodge/Mountain Gorilla view lodge / Muhabura hotel.

Day Five: Transfer to Lake Kivu

After a filling breakfast; transfer to the beautiful town of Gisenyi. Lake Kivu is an incredible scenic destination for relaxation after a long safari of trekking or hiking. Choose to enjoy a sundowner cruise, swim or laze in the sun along the lake shores. Dinner and overnight at Kivu Serena hotel / Kivu Sun hotel / Bethanie guest house.

Day Six: Launch Cruise and transfer back to Kigali

After breakfast, you will enjoy a speedboat ride on the lake. You will be able to see some water mammals and birds. After lunch, we will drive back to Kigali for dinner and overnight at Milles Collines / Kigali Serena / Beausejour hotel.

Day Seven: Experience Rwandan culture

Today you will visit the Ntarama genocide memorial, Nyanza palace and Kigali museum an important ethnological site. Watch the Intore cultural dance performed. Dinner and overnight spent at Milles Collines / Kigali Serena / Beauséjour hotel.

Day Eight: Boat trip in Akagera National Park

After breakfast at your Kigali hotel, our safari driver will pick you up and drive you to Akagera national park. A game drive on arrival may reward you with possible sightings of buffalo, topi, plains zebras, elands, impalas, giraffes, reedbucks, waterbucks, elephants and sitatungas.

You will have lunch at the Akagera game lodge. After lunch, we will have a boat ride on Lake Ihema. You will view hippos and crocodiles and other marine life. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge /Dereva hotel.

Day Nine: Game drives in Akagera

After breakfast, we will have another game drive along the lake circuit to view what you missed yesterday. Return to the lodge for lunch and later drive to Kigali to board your home flight.
